At sunrise at a water hole along the dry Boteti river near Xhumaga in Makgadikgadi pans in Botswana the hippo pod slowly began to wake up. These two large hippos were the first to head for the water and break the glassy surface

In Etosha National Park in Namibia Kalkheuvel waterhole is a favoured watering place for herds of elephants (Loxodonta africana). After drinking at the fresh water trough the elephant families came to a muddy hole and the fun began. This elephant calf, with the help of his mum, created a bubble bath.

In Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa we saw the birth of a blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) A few minutes before the mother had been strolling and grazing with the rest of the herd. Then she lay down and gave birth to the calf, clothed in glistening birth membranes. A half hour later the calf was standing and drinking from his mother

It was a "rumble in the jungle!. Two black rhinoceroses (Diceros bicornis bicornis), had an hour long fight, in the water and on the rocks of Moringa waterhole, Halali camp, Etosha National Park, Namibia. At around 2am I awoke in our roof top tent to loud strange roaring coming from the direction of Moringa waterhole. I was worried about going to take photos as I thought the animal making this terrible noise could be on the now deserted viewing point on the rocks above the waterhole. I was relieved to find a watchman at the entry steps, and we both carefully went up the walkway. These two black rhinoceroses(Diceros bicornis), were having a ferocious battle with the one on the right repeatedly attacking, launching himself like a giant battleship. After an hour he peacefully went off.
